A Talk With PRS Competitors

DittoeInterviewHave you ever wanted to ‘pick the brain’ of a PRS competitor? Maybe you were a little intimidated so you didn’t ask? Or perhaps you are new to the sport and have not had a chance to meet many accomplished shooters? Fear not as the 6.5 Guys have initiated a dialogue that is sure to benefit shooters at all levels.

The 6.5 Guys took the opportunity to talk to dozens of shooters at the 2015 Vegas Precision Rifle Challenge – these are shooters who compete at the national level. The cool thing about this sport is the willingness of competitors to share what they know so we got some excellent material. Here are some of the questions we posed to the competitors:

  • How did you get started in long range precision rifle shooting?
  • What specific training has had the most impact on your performance?
  • What key pieces of equipment and gear do you use?
  • What do you recommend to those who are interested in getting into this type of shooting?

We found their comments interesting and insightful for anyone looking to take their long range precision game to the next level. At your next match, consider asking similar questions of the better shooters. You’ll discover a genuine willingness and desire to mentor fellow shooters.

Here’s what we took away from the discussions:

  • This truly is a mental game. If you struggle with negative thoughts or fixate over your failures you only handicap yourself.
  • You can get into the sport without mortgaging your house to purchase the finest equipment. Chances are you have the equipment to get started – go with what you have. You can upgrade over time.
  • People get into the sport for all sorts of reasons, but most are relative newcomers.
  • There are equipment options available, particularly for left handed shooters, that were unheard of five or six years ago.
  • From a training perspective, work on your least favorite areas. Get off your belly and practice various positions. Dry fire as much as you can – it’s cheap and doesn’t damage anything. Attend as many matches as you can.
  • People seek inspiration from many sources. Sometimes it’s a close friend or mentor, other times it’s the folks trying to figure things out.

Our viewers certainly have their own answers to these questions. We encourage them to share their insights in our comments section.
